Trends
Most paper currencies in the world are fiat currencies, meaning without the backing of any objective standard such as the gold standard. The printing of such currency debases the value of the currency over time. With the current financial uncertainty due to the lack of our government’s monetary accountability and responsibility, we conclude that everyone should have an allocation in gold and silver coins and bullion. We believe that gold and silver coins and bullion are the most honest form of money and a place of stored value.

Merriam-Webster dictionary defines numismatics as the study or collection of coins, tokens and paper money and sometimes, related objects (as medals). In the industry, numismatics are coins that have a value over their precious metals content with factors such as scarcity, demand, grade and condition. Examples of numismatic coins are Saint- Gaudens, Liberty and proof coins. Semi-numismatic coins contain some value over their precious metals content in their demand.
Some examples of semi-numismatics are the British Sovereign and Swiss Franc, which also represent legal tender in the countries where they were made. Bullion may come in coin or bar form with its value based upon the precious metal content and cost of fabrication. The mark-up on bullion coins and bars is generally the lowest.
While numismatics are fascinating, several potential issues arise with this form of investing. Eagle European Capital, LLC suggests other options for investing in gold and silver. Most coins suggested by numismatists carry high commission rates in which the mark-ups may range from 20 to 35%.The beauty of these coins appeal to certain individuals and more to the coin collector market. However, the majority of people benefit more from ownership of less rare or beautiful coins.
Below are some reasons we choose different coins for investment other than numismatics.
* High commissions on rare coins raise the cost to an amount prohibitive for many individuals and cause longer time periods to offset the investment required
*In spite of graphs showing that particular rare coins outperform other investments, the statistics used generally do not include deflationary value
*During economic depression, numismatics price drops while gold prices increase; based on market value, a rare coin becomes worth only the amount an investor can and will pay for it
*No law protects against gold confiscation; the government currently allows ownership of gold coins, bullion and certificates, but they can reinstate confiscation without warning. The argument that gold numismatics are not confiscatable on the grounds that coin collections are exempt may or may not prove true. During the confiscation in 1933 very few Americans turned in their gold. Further, gold coins disappeared from circulation months before the scheduled confiscation began.
*Liquidity is an issue in a depression. During such times investors may not care as much about the beauty and age of coins. The metals content becomes much more important
*During an economic breakdown, most people fare better with a higher quantity of lower value coins over a few rare, beautiful ones
For these reasons, Eagle European Capital, LLC suggests the purchase of bullion and semi-numismatic coins that provide lower commissions, shorter return on investment periods, and the most beneficial long-term investment for our clients. Further, we recommend a core position in both physical gold and silver precious metals bullion and coins held in your possession.
